Author loses publisher contract over racial slur

It is a costly affair to use racial slur if you're a public figure, mainly because if you're an author. The example surfaced recently when Paula Deen's publisher canceled a deal with for multiple books, including an upcoming cookbook that was the number one seller on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. Her only fault was she admitted to have used racial slur.Ballantine Books made an official announcement that it would not release Paula Deen's New Testament: 25o Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up. The book was scheduled to be launched in October and was the first of a five-book deal announced early last year.

It is not fair to engage into racial slur in any situation. But in my opinion, the publisher has taken a hasty decision and should have at least left the matter aside and focus on publishing the book. Writers and authors have a right to differ on certain things and make loose statements. But to mix her public life into the personal one is not a good step. Although I'm against the slur and despise her for being racially sensitive.
