How do you decide and pick a good book

What comes to your mind while you wish to spend a couple of bucks in purchasing a book, or rather a good book per se? I've often heard people say that they are looking for good books on a certain topic or fiction or non-fiction or coffee table or poetry or stuff similar to that. However, they are confused as to what a good book looks like. In my humble opinion, it is extremely tough to define a good book. It has no specific form, shape, colour, author, religion. It is a book laid in thousands of books in the book store. Its identity is similar to those you might perhaps consider not-so-good books.

In short, what you might consider is a good book is perhaps a bad book for me, or your friend. However, it is the choice of topic that you're looking for. I might disregard Salman Rushdie as a good author and many of his books such as "Satanic Verses" or "Midnight's Children", etc. But many of my friends may have high praises for his works. Similarly I might love to read James Joyce while most of my friends may have an aversion to his works. It does not restrict to fiction alone. It might extend to books considered worldwide holy. While for a person who's not Christian, the Bible cannot be a good book, for a Christian it is a holy book.

Furthermore, a C-grade book detailing the sex stories might seem good to a person who wants to know or enjoy with them. Indeed, it is an uncharted territory where defining a good book on few parameters is next impossible. It is thus left to the discretion of the reader to decide what is good or bad. But yes, certainly there are a few books which you cannot say 'good'. Like I said 'C-grade' books. Their goodness has a limited space.
