Should authors court controversies?

I heard a strange thought that authors should refrain from political controversies. Why? Is there a valid reason to do so? Have our political circles become free of corruption, deceit, falsehood and trickery? If so, they can perhaps think for a moment to abstain controversies where authors are the focal point. Authors are the true journalist whose words will be read even after the generations have passed. They shoulder the responsibility of telling the truth to posterity.

Such thoughts are the result of angry politicians whose faces stand naked in front of the authors who have pledged to write truthfully. Writers do not court controversies willingly but often these are reactive. Salman Rushdie has been in the middle of a few, because what he saw was wrong on any human scale. Recently Many authors expressed ire over Modi's prime ministerial candidature from the BJP. They have every right to convey their thoughts in public. They have their reason to do so.

Instructions such as this that authors should not court controversies for political reasons has got no sense. They should, they must and they will.
